Section B - The US Public TV stations: |

DirecTV http://www.directv.com has announced that, beginning in 2008, they will role out HD versions of public TV stations in their HD local packages. If you a) have DirecTV with an HD package that includes locals, b) have a public TV station airing Doctor Who that is c) the primary public TV station in the market and d) airs Doctor Who on the HD subchannel of their digital programming, then as the roleout occurs you will eventually get to watch Doctor Who and the rest of the public station's programming on a channel with much more bandwidth and (hopefully) better picture. Secondary public TV stations will be waiting till at least 2009 to start seeing their programming in DirecTV's HD locals, when more bandwidth is supposedly going to be available. |

This does not change anything for DirecTV's standard definition local packages. Also, while Doctor Who might look better on a HD feed, Doctor Who itself is not HD. Plus, if you have a digital tuner and a good antenna you may already be able to pick up these stations without having to wait for DirecTV to add them to the satellite package. Most digital cable subscribers already have the HD and other digital PBS offerings due to a deal between cable companies and public TV stations a while back. Dish Network has no arrangement at this time. |

With some stations resting the Eccleston episodes to use later in the contract period, most stations will not be airing Doctor Who in the next few weeks. Hopefully we will start getting details on which stations are buying the Series 2 package (first set of David Tennant) in January. |

As of this writing, 45 stations are known to have bought the 2005 series of Doctor Who (the 13 Christopher Eccleston episodes). Many of the public TV stations have also gotten the Cut Down versions of Doctor Who Confidential Series 1 (as seen on the DVD set). Stations have the right to cycle through these episodes 4 times before February 28, 2009. If you are happy that your station is airing Doctor Who, write them a letter or send them an e-mail. (Maybe even keep an eye out for a pledge drive.) The number of stations buying Series 2 is unknown at this point. |

If Series 3 becomes available to public TV stations, it will be after the episodes have aired on BBC America. BBC America airs Series 3 from January to April 2008. |

4 Public TV stations currently have rights to air the classic Doctor Who run (1963-1989). Iowa Public TV is currently airing both the new series and Peter Davison episodes. KBTC 28 Tacoma, WA, Maryland Public TV, and WCET 48 Cincinnati, OH are airing Tom Baker episodes while resting the new series. |

One station has, to the best of our knowledge, used all their rights to the Series 1 package already - WLVT 39 Allentown, PA. They have aired cycled through all 13 episodes 4 times, which is the limit described in the package. If they air Series 1 again, then that means they re-bought the package or there is a misunderstanding about the meaning of cycling through the episodes 4 times. WILL 12 Urbana, IL, Iowa Public TV, and Idaho Public TV are currently on their 4th and presumably final cycle of Series 1 as well. |
